Important and general travel tips

Travel insurance is duty-bound in Egypt.

Passport needs to be 6 months valid after leaving Egypt.

The EU-legislation for hand baggage at all airports in the European Union:

Since November 6th 2006 all air passengers in the European Union (EU) are bound to new rules about what is permitted in hand luggage.

The new rules apply to all liquids, gels, pastes, lotions, aerosols and toiletries such as toothpaste, shaving cream, lip gloss, face creams, mascara, liquid soap, disinfectant or hair gel etc. and beverage consumption.

Rules for liquids in your hand luggage:

1. Liquids and gels must be carried in containers of less than 100 ml.
2. The containers must be carried in a transparent plastic bag.
3. Each passenger may only carry one transparent plastic bag.
4. The content of the transparent re-sealable plastic bag and must be less than 1 liter.

The transparent resealable plastic bag is to provide seperate screening of all the liquids.

If you have a quantity larger than 100ml. or a total of 1 liter with you, then this will be  mercilessly confiscated by the security!

All liquids bought at the airport or on board need to remain in the sealed pouch.

If you go through security posts, please make sure that you are no metal objects in your pockets or on your body.

Coats, jackets and large electrical appliances such as laptops are also to be offered separately for inspection.

Visa: When arriving at Cairo or Luxor airport you should buy a Visa, costs about € 15

Liability: The Key to Egypt Tours Team is not liable for damage, theft, loss, injury, accident or injury to a participant. Also impotence caused by such things as delays of transportation schedules, mechanical breakdown, strikes, natural disasters, wars and any circumstances that could not reasonably have been prevented, are beyond our responsibility. The named is covered by a travel insurance.

Vaccinations: Currently, vaccination against DTP Hepatitis A are only recommended.
For a current advice we advise you to contact your doctor or clinic.
You can also visit the website www.lcr.nl

Should you opt for vaccination then I recommend you to take Thuja D6 2 days in advance and a Dr Vogel or VSM Echinacea cure afterwards.

Health: Take in case of specific syndromes your personal medication for the entire travel period and a reserve stock of them. Spread it in your hand luggage and suitcase!

Climate: During the day we recommend a sun protecting prevention with a high protection and sun protective clothing. When the sun goes down it can cool quickly. And soon it feels cold because of the large temperature difference.
Hence, we recommend to take a jacket or extra warm sweater or jacket with you.
See the website: www.weeronline.nl/Egypt

Money: It's too expensive in the Netherlands to apply Egyptian money.
At the airport you can buy Egyptian pounds.

* Please note, if a banknote is wrinkled, or has a visible crack, or a visible damage to the silver mark, the Egyptian banks will NOT exchange this ticket.

In Cairo and Luxor you can use a cash machine (ATM). In Bahariya you only change!

The official currency is the Egyptian Pound (EGP).
£ 1 is 4 x 25 piastres or 2 x 50 piastres.
There are notes of 25 and 50 piastres and 1-5-10-20-50-100 and 250 pounds.

The rate may change daily. See: www.wisselkoers.nl
I pound = € 0.14 € ct I = £ 7
£ 10 = € 1.40 10 = € £ 70
£ 100 = € 14 - € 100 = £ 700

Tipping: Baksjies (Tipping) giving is a habit that arose from Islam, which prescribes that the rich should share with the less fortunate. For each service rendered a tip is expected.
This applies not only for tourists but also for the Egyptians themselves!

Sometimes it is hard to understand that for some small service a tip is expected, but try to keep in mind that for the Egyptians it is a necessary complement to their income, which falls under one of the lowest incomes of humanity.
It proves you a personal service, even if you allow that a door opening for you, it is usual for you to give 1 or 2 pounds (approximately 14 cents).
It is aalso usual to leave 1 or 2 pounds after a toilet visit in a restaurant

It may be that adults or children ask you for baksjies and provide no service.
Please voice your ex before you decide to give something. If you notice that they are not poor you say La habibi (no baby). Make kindly clear that you will not give them anything.

If you may come across needy and disabled people, you can always give them money, the Egyptians do so too, for there are no social services in Egypt. But please always use your discernment in this .........

Photographing: Egypt is a paradise for photographers! Yet you must take a number of written and unwritten rules into account. In most ancient Egyptian tombs, temples and museums you can only photograph or film (always without flash!) if you pay extra.

Women may in principle not be photographed. Do you want to photograph people ask please  - bakshish (tip) and a friendly gesture breaks through all language barriers!

La is No ... La schoucran is no thanks
Should your La schoucran not be accepted, than a hand on the heart as gesture of respect works often enough.

Clothing: During pyramid or temple visits and in the vicinity of the native population we advise to wear appropriate clothing out of respect for the local culture and lifestyle. In the desert you can wear what you feel comfortable in. We want to mention that wearing skirts is tricky.

General

We are grateful if you leave 'unnecessary items' such as clothes, sleeping bags, medicines etc. behind in Bahariya for the poor people that we provide from our As-Salaam development project.

If you want to bring something for the children, then children's toothbrushes and toothpaste, notebooks, pens, markers, pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, coloring books, bubbles or balloons are most welcome.

Even children, teenagers and men sunglasses are always more than welcome. In Bahariya bbad eye conditions are frequent. THE eye diseases are caused by the fine salt in the shifting sands  from the deserts, blown into the atmosphere.

However, we ask you to provide sponsored donations off the street! This makes begging children who can become very troublesome! If you give your sponsored gifts to us, we will ensure that they are distributed in a school or hospital.
